I’m delighted to welcome Caroline Mitchell to the blog today, as she publishes her new book, Don’t Turn Around. This one certainly looks intriguing!
Can you describe your new novel in one succinct but sensual sentence?
Don’t Turn Around is a dark, haunting crime thriller featuring a killer more dead than alive.
Who is your favourite character and why?
That’s tough because I like both Jennifer Knight and her partner Will equally. The characters live in my head for a long time before they reach paper, and I’ve become quite fond of them so it’s very hard to choose just one. I think out of everyone I have a special affinity for Frank as a child. There were times I just wanted to bring him home and make everything okay.
Which authors have been your main inspirations?
I adore Stephen King. I love the way he takes you on a journey. He’s not afraid to venture into the unknown and you know when you pick up one of his books you know you are in for a gripping journey. I also love current crime authors, but I don’t want to name just one! Authors like Mel Sherratt, Lisa Cutts, Angie Marsons, Rebecca Bradley and of course my fellow Bookouture authors spring to mind.
How does your writing process work; confusion and paper flying everywhere or calm and ordered?
My writing is far from ordered! The first thing I do when starting a new book is to buy a notebook and pen from Paperchase. I then make random scribbles that make sense only to me, until I have some semblance of an outline. I then scribble some more on my chalkboard in my study, and when I’m happy with that, I take out my Macbook and begin writing on Scrivener. That’s where the bulk of my writing takes place.
What is your guilty pleasure when writing? (Chocolate, wine, coffee…)
Dark music and lots of coffee. I can’t write without either!
Please share your blurb with us.
You don’t know him. But he knows you.
Soon he would be able to touch her, to feel the warmth of her blood. And when the time came, nothing would stop him.
As D.C. Jennifer Knight investigates a routine stabbing in the quiet town of Haven, she is shocked at what seems like a personal message from beyond the grave.
When more bodies are found, Jennifer is convinced the killings are somehow linked. What she discovers is more chilling than she could possibly imagine. The murders mirror those of the notorious Grim Reaper – from over twenty years ago. A killer her mother helped convict.
Jennifer can no longer ignore the personal connection. Is there a copycat killer at work? Was the wrong man convicted? Or is there something more sinister at play …
With her mother’s terrifying legacy spiralling out of control, Jennifer must look into her own dark past in a fight not only to stop a killer – but to save herself and those she loves.
A heart-stopping supernatural thriller to engross fans of Rachel Abbott, Paul Finch and James Oswald.
