I’m delighted to welcome fellow Legend Press author, Susanna Beard to the blog today to talk about her new novel, The Truth Waits. The Truth Waits is Susanna’s second novel, following the critically acclaimed Dare to Remember released last year, and is currently on offer at only 99p on Kindle! Here she is to tell us a little more about it.
Can you describe your new novel in one succinct but sensual sentence?
When she stumbles across the body of a young girl on a remote beach in Lithuania, Anna enters a dark world of crime and abuse to find out what happened to her.
Who is your favourite character and why?
I think Will is my favourite character. He’s young – in his late twenties – but old beyond his years. He’s seen a lot of the world and is very self-sufficient. Perhaps this is what makes him a little mysterious…
Which authors have been your main inspirations?
Such a tricky question! So many answers…I admire Isabel Allende, Hannah Kent, Sarah Winman, Dickens, Hardy, Austen, Colum McCann, Sylvia Plath, Matt Haig, Ruth Rendell, Fay Weldon, Ann Tyler…Well you did ask! I read so widely, as you can tell, it would be hard to put my finger on any particular authors.
How does your writing process work; confusion and paper flying everywhere or calm and ordered?
Mostly calm and ordered. I start with an idea, which kind of simmers in my mind for a while, and I think about it when I’m walking, or travelling perhaps. Then I try to write a broad outline – ‘try’ being the operative word! – and then I might try to put some more detail on it, like the characters’ backgrounds. But I might just get going and see what happens. To write, I need quiet, and my dogs, and copious amounts of tea!
What is your guilty pleasure when writing? (Chocolate, wine, coffee…)
Snuggling up on the sofa with a soft blanket over my legs and a little dog either side, a hot mug of tea next to me – usually all year round! Summer of 2018 was a rare exception; I moved everything into the garden and sat in the shade among the flowers and the bees. It did wonders for my writing!

The Truth Waits
Anna has everything worked out – a successful company, all the comforts she needs and no ties. But when she stumbles across the body of a young girl on a deserted beach in Lithuania, everything changes.
Anna is compelled to uncover the story behind the tragedy, despite concern from her partner, Will. Everything points towards sex trafficking, but as she searches, her own deepest secrets start to surface.
When Will disappears without a trace, Anna is pulled further into the murky world of organised crime. Time is running out for them all, and there’s a killer out there who will stop at nothing.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Susanna. I look forward to reading! You can purchase The Truth Waits here.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Susanna is fascinated by human relationships. She can be found people-watching wherever she goes, finding material for her writing. Despite the writer’s life, she has an adventurous streak and has swum with whale sharks in Australia, fallen down a crevasse in the French Alps and walked through the sewers of Brighton – not in that order.
Her passions include animals — particularly her dogs — walking in the countryside and tennis, which clears her brain of pretty much everything.
Susanna’s debut novel, Dare to Remember, was published in February 2017, and her second, The Truth Waits, launched on 1 November 2018. She aims to keep writing, and never to get old.
